Kammatiga Released

"Kammatiga" Released A memorial volume honoring Bappa was released by Dr. M.Chidanandamurthy in Bangalore on January 11th. Many great names in Kannada literature attended. Among those who assembled (that I noticed) were Nettur Srinivas Rao, Suryanath Kamath, Jayant Kaikini, Nemichandra, Gayatri, Ramakant Joshi, and Hemalata Mahishi. The hall was full and many guests had to stand during the entire function. I met many people whom I had known only electronically or had only heard of. There were artists, musicians, photographers, and editors of newspapers. It was a wonderful function organized by admirers of Kamat, and I felt their adulation of father had now been transferred on to me. Indeed, many people sought my autograph on the book! Copies of the book can be purchased from Kamadhenu Pustaka Bhavan in Bangalore for an introductory price of Rs.100 (US$2.00) It has been published by Kamat Memorial Trust, Honavar which has been established to perpetuate the works of K.L.Kamat. My Article in Vijaya Karnataka Popular Kannada daily "Vijaya Karnataka" (circulation 700,000) carried my article in last Sunday's supplement (Jan 11th). Kuvempu Birth Centennial

Kuvempu Birth Centennial K.V. Puttappa (pen name Kuvempu) is one of my most favorite writers. I have been deeply inspired by his poems and moved by his graphic novels. This year, Kuvempu's birth centennial is being observed all over Karnataka with much fanfare (and some controversy). The scale of the event is certainly motivated by caste politics. The fans have forgotten his message of universal mankind and are engaging in petty matters. But Kuvempu's genius belongs to all castes and creeds! There hasn't been a more versatile writer of Kannada language. I am compiling a exhibit of rare pictures from our archive to mark the occasion. (Comments Disabled for Now. Sorry!) Poem on Bappa

Poem on Bappa During the Kammatiga book release function, I became aware of a poem written by V.G.Bhat about Bappa. I have dug up the poem and have reproduced it in my Kannada blog V.G.Bhat was a frequent visitor to Bappa's Scientific Photo Lab and the two would chat hours together about literature, politics, and philosophy. I felt honored that he'd composed a poem on Bappa. My thanks to Gourish Kaikini for referencing it in his tribute to Bappa, thats how I came to know of it. As fate would have it, poet V.G.Bhat passed away soon after writing that poem, and even before it was published in his collection "Prarthana". Eminent scholar Gourish Kaikini also passed away after writing an affectionate tribute to Bappa, but before the publication of Kammatiga volume. (Comments Disabled for Now. Sorry!)
