| V.R. Kamat of Honavar No More I am sad to report a death in Kamat family. V.R. Kamat who is a distant relative --Babanna, as we called him, was my dad's cousin, but Hindu Joint Family system typically resulted in much closer bonds between extended family members than the relationships describe) -- but a fatherly figure to all Kamats of my generation.

| Women Issues | | ||
| Woman Money "Woman Money" or stridhan in India is the money provided to (or earned by) a woman to cater to her personal needs. Traditionally, women did not spend it, instead using it as an emergency fund to be used in grave family crisis or as a charity fund given away to friends and relatives. The problem with "woman money" was that it was not invested -- so it neither grew, nor the society benefited from it. Worse, the women were not taught how to manage this woman money, and possibly the funds were abused by men who had access to it. (See: Dowry) This tradition has continued to be a problem for the modern Indian woman, who makes her own money, but doesn't know what to do with it. Asita Prabhushankar has some money management tips and narrates her own interesting experiences of managing her "woman money".
Old Habits Die Hard "Eve Teasing" is the name given to the practice in India where men make unwanted sexual contact with unknown women in public places. It is very rampant. It is so common that nobody talks about it. Anyway, Deepak Jahagirdar (I am assuming he's Indian, by his name, and his behavior) was arrested for trying the same in USA -- on an aeroplane. He has brought shame on all Indians, and all men.

| Amateur Excellence | | ||
| Shantaram Goes to Peru Mahesh Shantaram (who used to have a blog called Filter Coffee) has a photo-essay on Peru titled Where Jesus Never Ruled. It includes more information and pictures than necessary, but the photographs by themselves tell a wonderful story. Makes me want to go to South America. I also hear Mahesh is taking up photo-journalism as a fulltime gig, and I look forward to his future works.
Asita Prabhushankar has written a novel called Beyond the Call of Voice. (see review at Tribune) Having grown up in an literary environment -- having Prabhushankar for dad, Kuvempu for a family friend, and Bhyrappa for a next door neighbor, I am surprised it took Asita this long to come out of the shell.
