State of Uttar Pradesh

For long, the land of Uttar Pradesh encompassing Gangetic plains and northern mountains was the most influential province in the history of India, being the cradle of its civilization and center of its political conflict. In the year 2000, the state was divided into two parts -- the present day Uttar Pradesh, and a new state, Uttaranchal.

Agra (where the Taj Mahal is located), Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Meerut are some of the important cities in the state.
