Romancing the Teacher
14th Century Painting
King Vikramaditya ( 1076 A.D. - 1127 A.D.)
A king in Central India wanted his daughter
Champavati to be educated by scholar Billana, but thought it was not appropriate to
let the two youngsters be alone. The princess was told to keep her eyes closed, lest she
may contact a horrible disease from the teacher. The teacher was told that his student was
blind ! The painting illustrates Champavati opening her eyes out of curiosity and
instantly falling in love with the teacher.
