The Helava community is a nomadic tribe of India, mostly living (and moving around) the state of Karnataka in southern India. They are worshippers of Lord Shiva.
It is said that the name comes from Kannada word "heluvavaru" or narrator -- from the profession of the community that made narration as a profession at a time when most people couldn't read or write (12-13th century in India). The Helavas are known for their unique oral traditions and storytelling skills. The Helavas are traditionally bards and genealogists, responsible for preserving the history and culture of the communities they serve. They are skilled in reciting epics, legends, and ballads, and their performances are an integral part of cultural events and festivals in the region.
