Introduction

Our last year's special on the Indians of African origin generated a lot interest  among the African diaspora. So this year, during the Black History Month of February, we are beginning a new section on the Indo-African nexus.

Of course, the most important bond between the African continent and the Indian subcontinent is one of peace, initiated by Mahatma Gandhi while he was in South Africa. But interestingly, the relationship extends far before the European occupation, as can be seen from this presentation. One of the most ancient historical artifacts found in the Indus valley resembles a African woman, and Lord Krishna (black tribal) is one of the important deities of Hinduism.
