Kinnal is a small village in Koppal district in Karnataka. About thirty-five
families of painters reside in Kinnala. They claim their descent from
Vijayanagar times. After the great battle and fall of Vijayanagar empire(1665 A.D), some painters left the capital and came to Kinnal and
took refuge under Nawab of Koppal under the Adilshahis. Their art
consist of mainly wood. Iron rust paste of tamarind seeds and jute powder
and tin powder. The admixture is used for light wood from which, artifacts
are made. These artists have specialized in making pedestals , cradles ,
painted seats, idols and dolls. Many articles used in the temples including
icons of different gods. All animals , birds are carved by them. The brushes
are made of squirrel tails. They mix colours themselves.
Ragamala paintings are their specialty.
Earlier rich people placed order for artifacts and planks. It is no more.
Hence the artists are poor and takeup other jobs. Only recently the State
and Central Governments of India are trying to help them in " atmanirbharata
