Sannati excavations have reveled that Ashokan Empire extended to Gulbarga region. A broken slab inscription indicates to specially appointed officers -- Dharma mahamatras. Perhaps Sannati was a very important center of trade and commerce and had directs links with further Southern Buddhist city of Nagarjunakonda (presently in the state of Andhra Pradesh) and also Banavasi in North Kanara district. Relics of stupa have been discovered at Sannati and earlier at Nagarjunakonda.
Kanchi was another important Buddhist centre in south. All these places were connected by highways in those ancient times. Sri Lanka became Buddhist in Ashokan times. It remained so over centuries, and later provided sound historical facts about constant cultural contacts it had via land trade routes through above mentioned places and through sea and ocean routes.
