Tenzing conquest of Everest in 1953 was a glorious triumph of the spirit of man, whose indelible mark was left behind on the snowy peaks of the Himalayas. Mountaineering by Indians was unknown before the independence. Inspired by Tenzing feat more and more young climbers began to participate in mountaineering and in 1954 a Mountaineering institute was established in Darjeeling, with which Tenzing was associated for many years.
