Raja Ram Mohan Roy
Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1774-1833) is regarded as the pioneer of "Indian Renaissance" in the 19th century. The essence of his teaching was that only by a critical synthesis of the cultures of the East (as in India) and West (as in Europe) could India go forward. He embodied in his person the synthesis of diverse cultures, for he was familiar with secular as well as religious literature in Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and English. At one of the most critical periods in Indian history, Ram Mohan Roy thus stood out as the champion of every progressive idea that was then current: the basic unity of all religions, the introduction of Western science in India and the social and educational uplift of women.
