Against this background, the present paper seeks to look at the archaeological and related evidence from one part of India - namely, the modern-day State of Rajasthan - and attempts to understand the available early data in the broader context and framework of the 'shaping' of the beliefs and practices that have, over time, come to form part of present-day 'Hinduism'.
