Abstract:There is a growing dis-satisfaction in the working of our parliamentary institutions. Some suggests presidential system, instead why should we not learn from the working of our own Panchayats which have served our people well for centuries.. The purpose of this article is to note the landmarks in the history of local institutions in Karnataka. These institutions continued to serve the people in their own way. When the British came, they found our panchayats in full control of our village administration inspite of wars and famines. In such a situation, a study of our pancahyats may provide inspiration to students of public administration.
