Banjaras--natural fabrics of India

Title:Banjaras--natural fabrics of India
Author:Lewis, Joanna
Publication:Fiberarts
Enumeration:v. 28 no. 1 (Summer 2001) p. 19
Abstract:Owned by Girish and Neeta Deshpande, the shop Banjaras--Natural Fabrics of India, in Pune, India, is a thriving textile business that sells and promotes Indian hand-loomed cloth from over ten different regions. The shop features many kinds of weaves, prints, silks, and cottons, including wonderful ikats from Orissa and Bastar weaves with rich vegetal dyes from Madhya Pradesh. Both owners are deeply concerned that India's rich textile heritage will not survive, and they have written articles for the Pune Times of India about the deplorable conditions in which most highly skilled weavers and dyers live and work.
