Culture Cut Apart? Rural Indian Embroideries and Commoditization

Title:Culture Cut Apart? Rural Indian Embroideries and Commoditization
Author:Rivers, Victoria Z.
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 49 Issue no. 3; March 1998, p. 70-77
Abstract:Commercialization and "commoditization", along with the resultant change in lifestyles and attitudes, have affected the production of distinctive embroidery styles and textile products created by numerous rural communities in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and the Deccan. Upper class perceptions of rural products and activities have further led to the discardation and commoditization of embroidery, and the writer offers examples of this phenomenon. Those with an interest could ensure the survival of old embroideries in their original forms.
