Abstract:This article examines in detail a heavily illustrated manuscript in the British Library of the well-known book of fables, produced in the Uniara court studio under Rao Raja Sardar Singh (r.1740-77), apparently for the amusement of his two sons Jasvant Singh and Maha Singh. The paper analyses the style of the miniatures, which are by an artist from Bundi, and attempts to place them and the manuscript in their historical and cultural context within the development of the Uniara state and the contemporary politics of Rajasthan.
