The initial development, connected with Rao Maldeo (1532-68/69), reached its zenith under the Rajas Udai Singh (1581-95) and Sur Singh (1595-1620). A semi-Mughal style, introduced by Sur Singh, Gaj Singh (1620-38), and Jaswant Singh (1638-78), was continued in the Jodhpur court, and developed into a pure Mughal style in the reign of Ajit Singh. This became an integral part of painting in the time of Abhai Singh (1724-50). In the later Jodhpur phase under Ram Singh (1750-52), Bakhat Singh (1752-53), Bijai Singh (1753-93), and Bhim Singh (1793-1803), the Mughal style gave way to Rajput tendencies, and its apogee was reached under Man Singh (1803-43), to whose reign a large number of paintings are ascribed.
