Abstract:Scenes of battle, heroism, love, and mythology frequently seen in Rajasthani paintings are largely drawn form the turbulent history of Rajasthan. Rajput painting falls into 3 distinct periods, beginning in early medieval times. Initiated by the Vaishnava revival, influences on the first phase included folk and Jaina art, and Vijayanagara and some of the Sultanates. The second phase was dominated by the newly formed Mughal style. After the decline of the Mughals, towards the end of the 18th century, another rich Rajput painting style emerged, having absorbed elements of the Mughal era. In fact, this very intermingling of styles that characterizes and enriches Rajput painting, provides vast scope for researchers and art historians, and this issue is dedicated to new research on the subject.
