Abstract:The foundation stone of Hari Mandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) was laid in 1588 at the site of the "Pool of Nector" in Amritsar by the Muslim Sufi saint Hazrat Mian Mir of Lahore, and the temple was completed by Guru Arjan Dev. The Golden Temple, as it stands today, is chiefly the work of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Amritsar developed as not only a place of pilgrimage, but also a flourishing trade centre.
