Abstract:Angelo da Fonseca, Goan by birth, Maharashtrian by adoption, and a Christian painter by choice was a pioneer of the Christian cultural renaissance in India. From the early '30s till his death in the late '60s a stream of paintings, mostly watercolours on card paper, were done by him. His art was chiefly illustrative and its content religious. His contribution lies in breaking out of old moulds and in striking a new path in the sphere of Christian art in Goa. His paintings are symbolic of the Indian interpretation (influenced by his teachers at Santiniketan) of Christian themes rooted in an indigenous visual vocabulary.
