Title:Jatayu The Valiant Vulture: Vernacular Art from Eastern India The Legend of Rama: Artistic Visions, edited by Vidya Dehejia,
Author:Williams, Joanna
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 45-3, p. 117-126
Abstract:Illustrated copies of the Orissa poet Upendra Bhanja's early 18th century Vaidehi Vilara and Lavanyavati dealing with the episode of Jatayu and Sita's kidnapping by Ravana -- were produced by artists such as Michha Patajoshi and Raghunath Prusti (late 19th century). Jatayu's role has been variously depicted in these Orissan paintings, and also the pats of Bengal, an illustrated copy of Tulsidas' Ramacharitamanasa from Midnapur in Bengal dated between 1773-75, and patachitras of Orissa by Jagannath Mohapatra.
