Title:A Painted Orissan Door Illustrating Ganesh's Genesis
Author:Pathak, Anamika
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 47 Issue no. 2; December 1995, p. 85-87
Abstract:A narrative painting focusing on the birth of Ganesha, adorning a door from Orissa, now in the National Museum, Delhi, is the subject of this note. The entral image of a dancing Ganesha in the centre and roundels above and below ontain the interesting story. Generally, during the ate medieval period, it ppears that -- with the Shiva Purana as a popular source -- artists devoutly ainted or carved the story of Ganesha's genesis on different surfaces. This tpe of door, made for temples, palaces, or houses, constitutes one of the most popular and traditional arts of Orissa, and is rarely found etched in such detail on doors in other parts of India.
