Indian Textiles through the Centuries
Title: | Indian Textiles through the Centuries | Author: | Jayakar, Pupul | Publication: | Marg | Enumeration: | Vol. 33 Issue no. 1, p. 59-80 | Abstract: | In the first millennium BCE, Panini was aware of cloths named for their colours -- red, indigo, ochre, etc. From the 12th century onwards, with the assimilation of Islamic influences, a delicate palette of colours introduced new plant chemistry to the master dyers of India. The Indian weaver produced in silk, cotton, and wool. The weaving belt lay in the east (Assam, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Andhra). New tools and methods were evolved, along with new ornamentation, patterns, and colours. Source of Abstract: Provided by Publisher | Tools: |
