Abstract: | The sculptural remains in Mathura have given a continuity to this religious centre for over a thousand years. During these years, Mathura art was patronized in the Mauryan, Sunga, Kshatrapa, Kushana, Gupta, and post-Gupta periods. The Kushana period was the golden age of the Mathura school of sculpture, during which all strains of carving were patronized and the naturalistic and hybrid Greco-Roman sculpture was transformed to become the precursor of the Gupta schools. However, the greatest contribution of the Kushanas in Mathura was to evolve the vital figure of Buddha as the teacher, embodying the message of dynamic calm.
