Terracottas

Title:Terracottas

Abstract:The Birla Collections have a large number of terracotta figurines and plaques, several of which are illustrated in the present volume, ranging from the BCE period to the 19th century CE. The art of making terracotta was not confined to northern India but was a common heritage and numerous terracottas have been found in other parts of India also. Terracottas from the Mauryan, Sunga, Gupta, and Kushana periods are discussed. Terracottas varied greatly in sizes from large figures to tiny objects and plaques. Though much of it is folkish art or a popular art not demanding connoisseurship, some finer creations possess real sculptural merit. Terracottas ranging from the 3rd century CE belonging to the Mauryan age, to 18th-century Bengal are depicted in this article with extended captions alongside.
