Abstract:The article interprets archaeological data in the light of recent enthno-archaeological studies carried out in north Gujarat and highlights the role these features played in the human and faunal life of the Harappan period. It outlines the present environment, and some current adaptations to it by the pastoral communities. The archaeological excavations indicates a great density of ancient sites belonging to the Mesolithic and Early/Mature/Late Harappan. It is concluded that the prehistoric settlements of north Gujarat developed along the same lines as the present-day pastoral camps, and had to deal with the same ecology.
