Abstract:This paper reviews the terracotta tradition of the Indus civilization with reference to its major types and the types that are found in the protohistoric cultures of the Indian subcontinent both before and after it. The nature of Indian protohistoric development has also been outlined. The specific examples are from the mature Indus civilization phase of the Indian sites of Lothal, Surkotada, Dholavira, Kalibangan and Banawali. The paper emphasizes the general diversity of their styles and argues that the basic tradition of terracottas as an integral part of Indian daily life was established during the period.
