Title: | Lalita Kala (Editorial) | Author: | Agrawala, V.S. | Publication: | Marg | Enumeration: | Vol. 4 Issue no. 2, p. 2-14 | Abstract: | The major trends and problems of Indian art from Vedic symbolism to "Lalita Kala", or fine art, and steps towards a proper study of these trends, are spelt out. These include an inventory of Vedic motifs, historical connection of the Indus Valley people with the ancient art of West Asia and links with Indian art itself, foreign contacts in the context of emergence of crafts and symbols in the Janapada age, folk symbolism of Sunga art, chronological position of Mathura and Gandhara schools and the rapid development of iconography, efflorescence of Gupta art and Kalidasa's chronological bearing with culture of the Gupta period, sources of Indian art terminologies, and the study of clay figures. The interpretation of Indian art holds great possibilities for the cultural renaissance to come. This rehabilitation is now called for with the dawn of Independence, and the concepts of "Sva-Rajya" and "Dharmachakra" are interpreted as "cultural rebirth" and "Wheel of Culture" respectively.
