The Evolution of Content in Amrita Sher-Gil's Paintings

Title:The Evolution of Content in Amrita Sher-Gil's Paintings
Author:Kapur, Geeta
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 25 Issue no. 2; March 1972, p. 39-53
Abstract:The essay discusses the content of Amrita Sher-Gil's paintings in some depth, her understanding of Western art, and the different phases of her painting in India. The paintings of the first phase (1935-37) are of uneven quality, and attempt to evolve an Indian type of face and figure. The second phase is seen in the 4 paintings of 1937, which were influenced by the Ajantaesque style and Amrita's travels in south India. The paintings of the third phase were influenced by Pahari miniatures.
