Abstract:The continuity of the Indian jewellery tradition is corroborated by archaeological and literary evidences: the vedic literature, the grammar of Panini, Buddhist literature (Jatakas), Greek literary sources, Kautilya's Arthasastra, reliefs showing personal adornments, paintings of Ajanta of the Gupta period, the Natya Shastra of Bharata, and the medieval sculptures of Orissa, central India, and the south. The ornaments worn by ordinary people have not changed much, and folk ornaments in decorative designs are still in use, among others by the Adivasis of India and the Muria girls of Bastar.
