Biography: Sekhar Chatterjee
Born in 1924 in Calcutta, Shri Sekhar Chatterjee was initiated in theatre by Utpal Dutt and later trained by Joan Littlewood at Theatre Workshop, London. Over a long career on the Bengali stage, Shri Sekhar Chatterjee has emerged as an outstanding actor and director. He has been specially acclaimed as an actor in the roles of Brect's Puntila, as Macduff and Lago in Shakespeare's Macbeth and Othello, and as Shardul Sing in Utpal Dutt's Kallol. He has directed over seventy plays including Puntila, which attracted high critical acclaim at the seventh International Brecht Festival, Hong Kong in1986. Sekhar Chatterjee has also acted in films directed by Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, and Richard Attenborough, among others.
