Biography: Ratansey Jetha

The career of Mr. Ratansey Jetha is a most conspicuous example of intellect and feeling in harmonious relation.

He is an intrepid leader with a deep-rooted faith in the philosophy of action. It is rare quality of personal courage that has endeared him to the populace. A legend of bravery has attached itself to his name.

Short in stature, with iron jaws, his forehead furrowed by constant deep thought, a steady gaze fixed behind his gold-rimmed glasses, armed with his Fascist fist, Mr. Ratansey Jehta is a born leader of men.

He was born at Dwarka in 1887. His mother was a lady of deep compassion and high talent. Her influence on the child mind was dynamic. She infused into him a colouful vein of heroic feeling.

As a student he was extremely popular. He was educated at the Dwaraka High School and the St.Xaviers College. He was a brilliant speaker and won many laurels. He graduated in 1910 and made a mark in the legal field. Thereafter he entered business.

As a cloth merchant he was very successful. Then he interested himself in the film industry and was connected with the working of the Precious Cinema, and the Kohinoor Films. He also started the Silver Factory and the Marble Factory. The Baroda Government indented on his services in connection with the Okha Port.

Mr. Ratansey is a fervent patriot. He joined Gandhiji in the historic Dandi March. He was the first man to picket foreign cloth godowns in Bombay. He displays great resourcefulness in organizing the picketing work. As the Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh he did splendid work. He was the treasurer of the "C" Ward Congress Committee.

His title to fame rests on the memorable services he rendered to the Hindus. He is the flag of their hope and the symbol of their flight. He is the moving spirit behind Hindu Din Daya Sangh and the Hindu Relief Committee. During the Bombay Riots he showed unexampled courage. Exposing his body to great peril he saved many women and children. In appreciation of his services the citizens of "C" Ward presented him with a gold medal. He earned the high esteem of all people as the Secretary of the "C" Ward Peace Committee.

Due to his tireless efforts the temple-entry movement is a profound success in the Bombay Presidency. He was greatly responsible forthcoming open the doors of the Vithoba Temple, the Round Temple and the Bhuleshwar Temple for the Harijans. He was the first Secretary of the "C" Ward Harijan Sevak Sangh.

His life is a thrilling drama, centering in his emotions. He is cast in the heroic mould and has played a prominent part in Bombay Politics.
