Title: | Social Reform and the Role of Brahma Samaj (With special reference to Mysore) | Author: | Leela B | Publication: | Itihasa Darshana / Karnataka Itihasa Academy, Bangalore | Enumeration: | Vol 4, 1989 | Abstract: | The Brahma Samaj originating in Bengal influenced the elite class in Mysore and Bangalore. Even though the roots of the Samaj in Bangalore could be traced back to 1872, real impetus came to the Samaj when Gopalswamy Aiyar became the secretary in 1878. Female education was given impetus. Membership increased from the literary class. Schools were established for boys and girls. The founding father was Pandit Shivanand Shastri, the other renowned members were Appavu Pillai Arcot Narayanswamy Mudaliar etc. Later the demise of the founding fathers dampened the activities of the Samaj. The National movement also suppressed the activites of the Samaj. Thus the Brahmo movement made a beginning towards social awareness in Mysore, but the battle for social reform was still far from being won. Source of Abstract: Provided by Author(s) | Tools: |
