Abstract:Indian craftsmen fashion textiles with care and creativity. Textiles represent a continuous tradition that has outlived centuries. Designs and patterns on the textiles have often reflected the cultural environment of the times. Certain motifs predominated and different crafts tended to employ them in almost identical form. The pattern of the fabric -- the history and development of patterning on textiles -- is examined in this article. The examples illustrated in this article present a comprehensive view of the prevailing design motifs from the 17th to the 19th century in embroidered, woven, and dyed fabrics.
