Title: | Survey of Arts and Crafts of Rajasthan: Techniques of Important Crafts and their Adaptations to Modern Use -- Textiles | Author: | Dhamija, Jasleen | Publication: | Marg | Enumeration: | Vol. 18 Issue no. 1; December 1964, p. 20-24 | Abstract: | The excavations at Rang Mahal show that both coarse and fine weaving were prevalent in Rajasthan from ancient times. The earliest wool weaving was perhaps in Rajasthan. Bikaner wool being the best. In cotton weaving, the coarse mill spun yarn is more prevalent, but fine quality work is also done, such as the Kota massaria cloth from Kaithan village, and the Mathania Mal used for Bandhani work on odhnis and pugrees (turbans). Durree weaving has centres at Tonk, Seroi, and Ramgarh (Jaisalmer district). The dyeing and printing centres are Barmer, Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, Pali, Udaipur, and Jaipur. The recent revival of some traditional techniques of printing has been helped greatly by the All India Handicrafts Board and the Artistic Crafts Institute, Jaipur.
