Natya -- Bhagavata Mela and Kuchipudi
Title: | Natya -- Bhagavata Mela and Kuchipudi | Author: | Khokar, Mohan | Publication: | Marg | Enumeration: | Vol. 10 Issue no. 4; September 1957, p. 27-36 | Abstract: | Bharata Natyam is not a dance style, but a dance technique that can be presented in at least 4 related forms: Sadir Natya, Kuravanji, Bhagavata Mela Nataka, and Kuchipudi. Bhagavata Mela Nataka and Kuchipudi are dance dramas performed by men, and based on the epics and the puranas. The Bhagavata Mela belongs to Tamil Nadu, while the Kuchipudi is of Andhra. Although these two dance dramas came into existence in the 15th or 16th century as a result of the Bhakti movement, their prototypes existed even earlier, as evident in inscriptional references. Tirtha Narayana and his disciple Sidheyendra Yogi contributed to the art of dance drama. Yogi created the art at Kuchelapuram (Kuchipudi), from which the Kuchipudi dance drama takes its name. The art of the Bhagavatas travelled over to Tanjavur under the patronage of the Nayakas. These two places became epicentres for the further development of Bhagavata Mela and Kuchipudi. The technique, performance, compositions, and characteristic features of both these forms of dance drama are described in detail. Source of Abstract: Provided by Publisher | Tools: |
