The Battle of Lanka at Angkor Wat: A Visual Metaphor The Legend of Rama: Artistic Visions, edited by Vidya Dehejia,

Title:The Battle of Lanka at Angkor Wat: A Visual Metaphor The Legend of Rama: Artistic Visions, edited by Vidya Dehejia,

Abstract:The composition of the battle scene at Angkor Wat is organized at 4 levels: directionality (north-south divide) of the opposing armies; a combination of scale and grouping or placement of the figures; numerically significant sets of combatants which are further reinforced by the unusual architectural device of inter-pillar spaces along the corridor; and the technique of creating order in the battle scene. It is possible that a parallel was intended between the historical alliance of the Khmers and Chams against the Dai Viet between 1128-33, and the alliance of Rama and Sugriva against Ravana.
