Author:Jakimowicz-Shah, Marta
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 36 Issue no. 2, p. 77-79
Abstract:The Old Prints and Drawings Department of the Warsaw University Library houses a most unusual collection of 18th-century paintings from Andhra Pradesh. These paintings present 105 mythological images. Sets like these used to be made for the princes and rulers in south India or kept for sale near important temples. The majority of the leaves depict hieratic representations of Hindu deities. The note gives an overview of the paintings highlighting inscriptions, patronage, style, importance of icons, and acquisition of the set.
