Hydraulic Works New Light on Hampi: Recent Research at Vijayanagara, edited by John M. Fritz and George Michell,

Abstract:The elaborate water supply system with which Vijayanagara was provided and upon which its vast population depended for more than 200 years, is outlined. Facilities were constructed for water supply to the Royal Centre and to supply the rest of the urban core. The provision of irrigation facilities in this semi-arid Deccan region was viewed as a basic duty of the king in his roles as provider and protector. The core of perennially irrigated lands located inside the fortified metropolitan area provided sufficient food to sustain the city's population; the lands yielded agricultural revenue. Vijayanagara was thus agriculturally self-sufficient and could withstand the protracted sieges and periods of political instability which occurred in its history.
