Abstract:The exchange of artistic ideas between the Vijayanagara kingdom and the Bahmani capitals of Bidar and Gulbarga further north are seen in the rich plaster work of many of the buildings in the Royal Centre at Vijayanagara to similar details on the mosques and tombs at Gulbarga and Bidar. Closely focused on in this article are the Elephant Stables, Octagonal Pavilion, Lotus Mahal, and Queens' bath. This comparison may help provide the Vijayanagara examples with a more precise chronology since their dating within 200 years or so of occupation of the Royal Centre still remains problematic.
