The Vanishing World of Tribal Arts 2000: Reflections On The Arts In India, edited by Pratapaditya Pal,
Title: | The Vanishing World of Tribal Arts 2000: Reflections On The Arts In India, edited by Pratapaditya Pal, | Author: | Mallebrein, Cornelia | Publication: | Marg | Enumeration: | Vol. 52-2, p. 48-59 | Abstract: | The writer explains the original purpose of tribal art objects and how in recent years their function has shifted away from use in worship and daily life, to replication for sale to tourists. As the tribal culture and way of life is being lost, original pieces which earlier had religious significance for the owner, are being bought by clever art dealers, and traditional wall paintings are being painted over. While progress and the resultant change in tribal traditions cannot be halted, the writer feels that government programmes for tribals should go beyond economic development to preservation of their culture and creativity, so that the quality of the art does not suffer in the attempt to produce quantity.
