Abstract:Maheswar Mohapatra's Abhinaya Chandrika is the only text on Odissi which carries detailed descriptions of costumes, ornaments, and make-up used. The costume consists of a pattasari (made of indigenous silk), a kanchula (traditional blouse), a nibi-bandha (an apron-like cover for the hips), and a jhoba (cord tied like a waist-band). Various traditional ornaments worn by the dancer include the chandra, alaka, and ketaki for the head; kapa for the ears; chapasari and padakatilaka for the neck; tayita for the arms; karakankan for the wrists; and begapatia for the waist; and nupura, pahuda, and bala for the ankles and feet. The make-up includes kajal, kumkum, and alata.
