Historical Survey: Myths, Legends and Historical Facts

Title:Historical Survey: Myths, Legends and Historical Facts
Author:Khokar, Mohan
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 13 Issue no. 2; March 1960, p. 16-18
Abstract:On the evidence of the Natyashastra of Bharata, it may be concluded that a Shastraic form of dance was prevalent in Orissa 2000 years ago. Odissi may be a continuation of this art, as it contains several karanas, hastas, and movements based on the Natyashastra. Like other dance traditions, Odissi is symbolically ascribed to divine origin (i.e., Shiva), and it has been maintained and perpetuated by the devadasis or Maharis, the dancing girls dedicated to the temples. The article discusses the historical evidence of dance in Orissa, and the perpetuation of the Mahari tradition by Orissan rulers.
