Abstract:The myth-making tendency of different civilizations leads to the moulding of images, symbols, and signs. The writer examines some such artistic expressions: the images from Harrappa and Mohenjodaro; Mauryan pillar capitals, Yaksha images, Kanishka's portrait sculptures; the cave temples of Bharhut, Bhaja, Karla, Elephanta, Ellora, and Aurangabad; the development of the Buddha image; the temples at Bhitargaon, Mahabalipuram, Khajuraho, and Konarak; the Nataraja image of south India; and the modern sculptures of the 20th century.
