Shrines in the Landscape of the Absolute

Title:Shrines in the Landscape of the Absolute
Author:A. Coomaraswamy, S.K.
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 10 Issue no. 3; June 1957, p. 24-44
Abstract:The accounts of Khajuraho by Abu Rihan (who accompanied Mahmud in his campaign against Kalinjar in 1022) and Ibn Batuta (who visited the place in 1335), and of the province of Jajhoti (Bundelkhand) by Hiuen Tsang (641) are discussed. A chronological arrangement of the temples is not possible, but 3 inscriptions in the temples point to a 10th-11th century date for most of the western group. The temple of Chonsant Jogini (64 female of Kali) is said to be the most ancient of the Khajuraho group, placed at about the 8th century or even 2 or 3 centuries earlier. The Kandariya Mahadeva temple is the largest. The other temples examined are Devi Jagadamba (originally dedicated to Vishnu), Vishvanatha (Shiva), Chitragupta, Parsvanatha, and Adinatha.
