Title:Bagh Caves: A Predicament for Conservators
Authors:Mishra, Phanikant and Ritu Mishra
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 53 Issue no. 3; March 2002, p. 46-55
Abstract:The 'Ajanta of Madhya Pradesh' the nine Bagh caves in Dhar district epitomize the classical finesse of Buddhist painting, sculpture, and cave architecture of the Gupta era. In fact the complex surpasses Ajanta, Ellora, Karle, and Kanheri in richness of themes and techniques. Bagh has not received as much recognition partly because it has been off-limits to visitors for about 20 years owing to its poor condition. The feature discusses the conservation challenges of their being located in one of the heavy rainfall regions of India, and if the salvage efforts of the ASI work out, the enchantment of Bagh art will once again be re-created.
