This is a cool story. Shirali is a village close to where I grew up in India, that has no medical facilities, leave alone special care like a heart hospital. Few years ago, a poor villager had an heart attack and then he travelled to Mangalore for treatment at the Hospital of the Kasturba Medical College. He survived and was ever grateful to his cardiologist, Dr. Padmanabh Kamath (no relationship to me). But how can/ what can a poor man pay in return? In a subsequent visit, the villager (now no longer living), made a decorative item from his paddy fields and gave as a gift to the cardiologist.
A patient's humble gift of gratitude
The innocence of the villager deeply moved the doctor and in the year 2018, Dr. Kamath raised funds to make portable ECG machines to make heart diagnosis accessible to remote villages in India. This week it was Shirali's turn to receive the 4G/Wifi capable mobile ECG unit. The villagers, and local medical professionals joyfully received the "return-gift" from the cardiologist. Hat Tip to G.U. Bhat for the story tip and pictures.
