How America Works - II | |
Report by Chana Joffee Walt on NPR is an eye-opener. It is the story of a determined Brazilian bureaucrat taking on the power of USA, winning in WTO courts, only to find out that America doesn't care for opinions of the UN. Then he tries the old fashioned "special interest lobbying" and succeeds. Succeeds how? In addition to paying subsidies to American cotton growers, US agrees to pay subsidies to Brazilian cotton growers! I know it is fantastic. But it is *exactly* how America works. Americans are brilliant deal makers, many times missing on the subtleties of principles or philosophical ideas. Another news just is coming out -- America is rumored to have offered Israel billions of dollars to make peace with Palestinians.
