I am not much of a TV watcher, but didn't want to be socially isolated, so ordered DirecTV and started enjoying the Tennis Grandslam events on the HDTV. What I didn't enjoy was the unauthorized charges DirecTV started adding to my bill. They said they gave me a trial of some channels which I neither ordered and never received. When I called to cancel these channels (which I don't have!), they insisted that I pay for partial month !(a $7.20 charge). For me, it was not about money anyway so I refused. They insisted that I pay it. In anger, I asked them to disconnect the service, because I felt like I didn't want to deal with a company that could not correct a billing error on their part. Guess what, I was charged a cancellation fee -- amount equal to the two year agreement as if I had utilized the service -- when I said I would pay it at the end of the contract agreement, they charged my credit card on file. Then I read all the fine print (for which I have never agreed or signed) but they sent it with a statement. Believe it or not -- the fine print says that they can do what they want! It says that they can use any bank or credit card numbers they have access to and claim any amount they think is due from you. The fine print also says that I have agreed not to go to court, but instead go to a third party dispute resolving agency, which is obviously run by them. My peace of mind is worth more than the $450 they took from me unfairly, and illegally (without my authorization). I want my friends and readers to be aware of this practice by DirecTV.
Since writing this entry, I have become aware of many many worse experiences (a classic example of rip-off is they say they will send a box to return the equipment, but don't send it, but charge you as if you didn't send the equipment.). Link to Hate DirecTV Facebook Group
