This is Alabama. We speak Redneck.
Tim James, a candidate for the Governor of Alabama (whose only qualification to run is that his daddy served in that position), is much rediculed in the press for his campaign video "This is Alabama, we speak English".
I am from India, a country of 300 languages and tolerant-to-a-fault of other languages. Yet, I have nothing against having one language in USA -- English. But Tim James' message is filled with such anti-immigrant vitriol that the underlying racism is not even concealed.
I'd say most people in Alabama are ashamed of their image as racists. Unfortunately, Tim James doesn't know it.
People like Tim James (there are lots of them in Alabama) don't even know why the south lost the civil war (because they were fighting for an immoral cause).
Had it been 1860, you can imagine James' campaign ad. on YouTube would have gone something like this -- "This is Alabama. Slavery makes sense to me. Does it to you?"
