Death of Eliza's Creator | |
As a student of computer science, the computer chess program and Eliza are two computer programs I have pondered and argued most about. Today I heard about the death of Prof. Joseph Weizenbaum, the creator of Eliza. May his soul rest in peace. Eliza and I While studying engineering in India, my friend Sridhar Sharma and I mimicked the parsing elements of Eliza and had built a natural language shell for Unix. It was silly, but we got endless entertainment trying to trick and defeat the algorithm. Computer Chess and I Although now he has relinquished the top computer chess program to the IBM supercomputer (specifically engineered to play chess), my Professor, Dr. Hyatt was the computer chess champion once. Part of my graduate studies in computer science was funded by a research grant on parallel processing techniques.
